Cutting It To The Bone
Shopping for car insurance is all about saving money. That’s why you’re here, and that’s why we pledge to save you more than any other car insurance carrier, service, broker or agent. One of the ways we do this is by helping you know when to say “no” to unnecessary coverage. While “unnecessary” could fairly be said to be in the eye of the beholder, there are three places in the typical auto insurance policy where most people do not need to spend money but do anyway. You don’t need to be one of them:
- Rental car coverage. If you travel a lot or find yourself for one reason or another needing a rental car every twelve months or so, then sure. Having rental car coverage on your insurance policy is a convenient way to go. Otherwise, you’re probably better off keeping your money. Why spend a few bucks every month for something you’re not using?
- Low deductibles. Nobody wants to pay a lot of money out of pocket after they’ve been in an accident. This is why so many auto insurance policyholders opt for low deductibles. But let’s face it: Nobody wants to be in an accident, period. Choosing a lower deductible doesn’t keep the accidents away. What it does is make you poorer. Raising your deductible is the best way to lower the cost of your vehicle insurance. Think about it: If worse came to worse and you had to use your Visa card in the wake of an accident, how much could you afford to put on that card? $1,000? $1,500? $2,000? That’s the amount you should claim as your deductible. The move could save you hundreds every year.
- Coverage for older vehicles. Are you driving an older vehicle that’s only worth a few hundred dollars? If so, check the coverage level on your policy. You may have it set too high. Remember, it is not as expensive to fix a vehicle that is old and already sporting a few dings. One of the biggest advantages of driving an old vehicle is that you can save on your auto insurance. Take advantage of that. The money you save may one day help you buy a much better vehicle.
Go over you policy with a fine tooth comb. Just because something is offered in it doesn’t mean you need it. Buy what you need and leave the rest. Remember, the smartest money you’ll ever earn is the money you don’t give away foolishly.
