Insurance Documents: When is it okay to Toss Them?

If you feel as though papers are piling up around your house and don’t have any idea of what to do with them, you’re not alone. It is hard to decide which papers are important to keep permanently, the ones to keep only while they apply, or the documents that can be tossed as soon as they’re read.

Important documents can be intimidating to throw away. It’s hard to k now if you’ll use them again. The declaration page (doc page) is one of these documents. The declaration page is one that you receive every term describing your coverage for health, home, and auto insurance. Here are a few tips we have come up with to help you know when to toss papers and when to keep them hanging around:

  • For all three types of insurance, you are safe to toss your old declaration pages after they expire and you receive a new declaration page for the next term. Make sure to shred your old declaration page so that no one is able to steal your personal information.

The exceptions to this are:

  • If you decide to change insurance providers before a term is over. You should keep your current declaration page until you receive the new one from your new provider. Once you receive it, feel free shred the old one.
  • Once you sell a home or vehicle you can toss the insurance coverage for that item. There is no need to keep insurance policies for items you no longer own.
  • The only time you need to keep a declaration page past it’s expiration date is if there is an open pending claim on the insured item. Keep the declaration page for that particular health, home, or auto insurance claim until it is close.  Then toss it!
